Tan Care
ONE WEEK BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
Discontinue the use of retinols. These will cause uneven development. If this is unavoidable, ask to skip your face. You can always match it with makeup.
24 HOURS BEFORE YOUR SESSION
EXFOLIATE. EXFOLIATE. EXFOLIATE.
Pre-session exfoliation is the first step to achieving flawless spray tanning results. It is best to clear away dry, dead skin cells with an exfoliating mitt. We have a great one, made just for sunless tans! This will polish and prep the skin to ensure a smooth canvas, even development, and long lasting wear.
PRO TIPS TO PREP FOR THE PERFECT TAN
Avoid using big brand bar soaps, high pH shower products, or in-shower moisturizers. Be sure to complete any waxing, shaving, or use of depilatory creams no later than 24 hours prior to your session. Do not use any Dove, Ivory, or Bath & Body Works products. Dove products leave a residue on your skin that directly leads to a blotchy tan. Ivory and Bath & Bodyworks products raise your body’s pH. We carry a great line of ultra moisturizing soaps and lotions made specifically for spray tans!
One Week Before Your Appointment
Discontinue the use of retinols or retinoids, especially on the face. These products accelerate skin cell turnover and can cause uneven development or premature fading.
If stopping retinols isn’t possible, simply let us know and we’ll skip your face—you can always match your glow with makeup.
24 Hours Before Your Session
EXFOLIATE. EXFOLIATE. EXFOLIATE.
Proper exfoliation is the foundation of a flawless spray tan. Removing dry, dead skin cells creates a smooth, even surface so your tan develops beautifully and lasts longer.
We recommend exfoliating with a textured exfoliating mitt rather than scrubs, which can leave residue behind. (We carry a spray-tan-safe exfoliating mitt designed specifically for sunless tanning.)

Pro Tips for Best Results

Avoid big-brand bar soaps, high-pH body washes, and in-shower moisturizers
-
Complete shaving, waxing, or depilatory creams at least 24 hours prior to your appointment
-
Do not use Dove, Ivory, or Bath & Body Works products
-
Dove leaves a residue that can cause blotchy results

Ivory and Bath & Body Works products raise the skin’s pH, which interferes with proper tan development

Proper aftercare is essential to allow your tan to fully develop and wear evenly. Please follow these guidelines closely for best results:
First 12 Hours After Your Session
-
Wear loose, comfortable clothing only
-
Avoid tight jeans, bras, shapewear, spandex, fitted tops, socks, or tight shoes
-
-
Do not swim, shower with soap, or exercise vigorously
-
Sweat, moisture, and chlorine can interfere with development and cause uneven color
-
First 24 Hours
-
Do not shave for at least 24 hours after your appointment
Fragrance & Footwear
-
Apply perfume or body spray to clothing, not directly on the skin
-
Alcohol-based products can break down your tan and cause patchiness
-
-
Avoid tall or tight boots immediately after tanning
-
These can rub and disrupt color on the legs
-
Flip flops or loose footwear are best
-
Important Shower Tip
-
When you do rinse, do not urinate in the shower
-
Urine will stop tan development where it comes into contact with the skin and can cause visible streaking
-
Following these steps will help your tan develop evenly, last longer, and fade beautifully—just the way we intend at Queen City Tan ✨
-
Proper maintenance will help your tan fade evenly and last as long as possible.
-
Moisturize daily
Apply a high-quality, oil-free lotion twice a day to extend the life of your tan and prevent premature fading. We carry a full line of spray-tan-safe products designed to keep your glow looking fresh and even. -
Be mindful with water & heat
Avoid long, hot baths or showers, as heat accelerates exfoliation. After bathing, pat skin dry—rubbing with a towel can cause uneven fading. -
Protect while swimming
If swimming is unavoidable, use an oil-free, waterproof sunscreen to help shield your tan from chlorine and saltwater. -
Shave smart
Always start with a fresh, clean razor to prevent streaking and uneven wear. -
Fragrance placement matters
Apply perfume or body spray to clothing only, not directly on the skin. Alcohol-based fragrances can break down the tan and cause patchiness. -
Powder when sweating
If you’ll be sweating, apply a spray-tan-safe body powder to reduce friction and help your tan last longer. We carry a fantastic-smelling powder made specifically for sunless tans.
Following these tips will keep your color smooth, even, and radiant—the signature Queen City Tan glow ✨
The most common questions we get from our clients
After your first trimester, with a release from your doctor, absolutely! Pregnant or nursing women should consult their physician, and obtain a written release before using. We will require a copy of that release. Spray tanning is not normally contraindicated when a mask or nose filters are used. But each pregnancy is different, your medical care provider may prefer a more cautious approach based on your specific needs and health concerns.
Unfortunately, we can't spray tan over a sunburn or if you've had a sunburn recently. The damaged skin tans very differently than the rest of your body and will result in what looks like a tie-dye type tan.
Any manicures, pedicures, or waxing must be completed 48 hours BEFORE your appointment. Scroll down for our Tan Care page to find out the proper steps that need to be followed to prepare for your spray tan. You will also receive prep instructions in your email when you book your appointment.
